How to start a conversation on a dating app
The strongest first message is short, respectful, and based on something the other person chose to share in their profile.
Use one specific detail
Reference a hobby, photograph, destination, book, or food they mentioned, then ask an easy open question. This shows attention without creating pressure.
“You mentioned weekend road trips—what is your favorite place within a few hours of home?”
“That garden photo looks wonderful. What do you most enjoy growing?”
“You listed live jazz. Have you heard anyone memorable recently?”
Keep the first exchange balanced
Answer questions with enough detail to continue the conversation, then ask something related. Avoid sending several messages when the other person has not replied.
Skip generic compliments and interviews
A respectful compliment can be fine, but comments focused only on appearance are difficult to build on. Likewise, a long sequence of questions can feel like an interview. Share something about yourself too.
Respect silence and boundaries
No response is not an invitation to apply pressure. Move on politely. Never demand personal contact details, photographs, or explanations.
